Gateway Soccer - University Challenge
(Feb. 1) -- The Gateway Varsity soccer team overcame injuries and a blackout to retain the University Challenge trophy over arch rival Taylor on Friday night with a hard fought 0-0 draw in regulation and a 3-1 win in penalties.  This marks the third year in a row the Gators have won this annual rivalry match.  Penalty goals by seniors Nadia Matos, Isabel Cummings, and Ainsley Yarbrough proved to be the difference.  Nadia Matos recorded the shutout in goal behind a solid team defensive effort.

Gateway's JV team also scored a 1-0 over the Taylor JV team prior to the Varsity match.  Freshman Phoebe Cook scored the lone goal while freshmen Haeeda Mubashar and Kaylee Yarbrough combined for the shutout.

Next action for both squads is this Friday at Salado.  JV starts at 5pm and Varsity at 7pm.  District play starts next week when Rockdale visits Tuesday, February 12 for a 6pm kick off.
